A hybrid inverter can combine solar and battery functions, but an existing home with a standard solar inverter may still be able to add a battery using a different configuration. I first check the inverter, system age, solar size, battery options and whether the solar system itself should also be upgraded.
What is a hybrid inverter?
A hybrid inverter is designed to manage solar generation and compatible battery storage within the same system. It can be a neat option when solar and battery are installed together.
What if I already have a normal solar inverter?
That does not automatically mean the whole inverter must be replaced. Some batteries can be added in an AC-coupled arrangement, where the battery uses its own power-conversion equipment alongside the existing solar inverter.
When replacement may make sense
I may investigate replacing the inverter if the existing equipment is old, the system is being expanded, compatibility is poor, the inverter is already nearing the end of its useful life, or a redesigned system gives a better overall result.
Why I do not make this decision from the battery brand alone
The better question is what combination of existing equipment, new solar capacity, battery design, backup requirements and network limits gives the customer the best result.
Example
A six-year-old solar system with a healthy inverter may not need to be completely replaced just to add storage. An older or undersized system with limited compatibility may be a different story. The existing equipment needs to be checked first.
What I need to see
- Inverter brand and model
- Approximate system age
- Solar panel capacity
- Current exports and grid use
- Whether more solar is being considered
- Backup requirements
- Switchboard and installation details
This is why a photo of the inverter label and a recent electricity bill can be much more useful than simply asking whether the inverter is “battery ready”.
